Laser Spectroscopy of the Ytterbium 173 Hyperfine States

Abstract

We report measurements of the transition frequencies of the hyperfine states of Ytterbium 173. These measurements correct a serious error in the literature. We use a GPS-referenced optical frequency comb to determine our laser frequencies with an absolute uncertainty of 40 kHz. We show that ignoring quantum interference effects in the excitation and fluorescence pathways leads to errors on the order of 2 MHz.
