Advancing the Security and Usability of Encrypted Email
End-to-end encryption systems have typically suffered from poor usability and have never achieved widespread adoption. Email encryption systems designed in decades past, such as PGP, remain unusable and suffer from security flaws making them untenable solutions for the long term. Newer end-to-end encryption protocols, such as the Signal Protocol from Open Whisper Systems, have been implemented in several popular messaging apps, but have not been adapted for use in email. By integrating our previous experience building usable secure email tools with modern encryption protocols and key distribution systems, we will significantly advance the state-of-the-art of encrypted email, protecting the conversations of users worldwide.
