Title

jsr223: A Simple Interface Between R, Java, and Java-Based Scripting Languages JavaScript, Jython (Python), JRuby (Ruby), and Groovy

Abstract

The R package jsr223 employs the Java Scripting API to bring four scripting languages and, by extension, countless libraries to the R software environment. jsr223 uses intuitive syntax to blend JavaScript, Ruby, Python, and Groovy with R script. Furthermore, jsr223 makes Java libraries easy to use and reduces the cumbersome task of sharing data between language environments to a simple variable assignment. This integration leverages the performance benefits and cross-platform capabilities of the Java Virtual Machine. In all, these features significantly extend the computing capabilities of the R software environment.
