DEAN’S MESSAGE

DEPT. NEWS

Welcome to the September edition of our eNewsletter. With school back in session and our students successfully engaged in their new classes, we have directed our efforts toward an exciting new project that will benefit an important subsection of our college family — you.

A few months ago, I used this space to tell you about our new college website and the many new tools it offers us to better communicate with our students, alumni and friends in the online realm. So far we have been very pleased with the effectiveness of the new site in both opening and maintaining a continuous dialogue between all of us here in Provo and our many friends around the world — but we want to take this digital progression one step further.

That’s why I am excited to announce a new portion of our website dedicated exclusively to our college alumni and friends. This interactive portal, which you can visit at
cpms-alumni.byu.edu, will help further our goal of forging tighter bonds and promoting greater communication within the CPMS community, regardless of the distances that may currently separate us.

By signing up with the Alumni & Friends section of our college website, you will be able to build a personal profile and connect with other members of the BYU family through a variety of innovative tools.

You will also be able to interact with and receive updates from various alumni organizations and clubs, as well as your respective departments.

Furthermore, we will begin distributing college and department information (including this eNewsletter) via the new alumni portal, and members will be able manage all of their subscriptions and select the updates they would like to receive in order to stay current on the latest news and events.

These exciting additions will help you use our website more effectively to interact with one another and with the college as we strive to keep you apprised of the exciting things happening here at CPMS.

I encourage you to register, create your profile and check out the many innovative features now available. Look for a follow up email from the CPMS Alumni Community containing your personal Activation ID, which will be used during the registration process.

As always, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to keeping in touch in new and exciting ways.

MATH DEPARTMENT GETS A NEW LOOK

Returning mathematics students were greeted by entirely new department facilities this September.

This process ended just in time for students and teachers alike. Students now have a single office to visit to obtain department information, and professors have a central hub to work from.

“It’s really nice to have a big open area for all the staff,” Dorff said. “They used to be in different rooms and you had to go all over the place to talk to whomever you needed.”

In addition to increased efficiency, and convenience for students and visitors, the renovations will help promote research by providing additional room to accommodate the recent increase in undergraduate mentoring, as well as anticipated growth in the number of graduate students. The remodel also allows professors to be organized by research area, simplifying collaborative efforts.

“We tried to get everyone who was doing research in the same subject in the same vicinity,” department secretary Lonnette Stoddard said. “They’re all together. So when they want to do research, they’re all just right there.”

Other reasons for the move include the growth of the department and the desperate need to give the department a facelift, as evidenced by the 30 years of wear on most of the furniture.
